A Special Edition of Monday Loves

Today's Monday Loves is going to be set up a little bit differently. Usually, I post about 10 pictures of something that I love, ie) cake. But today, I am dedicating my post to a very special present I received recently from Daniel. He got me this very beautiful ring, and I absolutely love it. Isn't he just wonderful?

Making an earthquake-tough bridge.

I am currently watching a show on the Science Channel on re-building and re-engineering the east span of the Bay Bridge in California. This is absolutely brilliant. California is prone to earthquakes, since it lies on the San Andres Fault, and in 1989, an earthquake caused part of the Bay Bridge to collapse. It was fixed, but the bridge would potentially have the same problem during future earthquakes, so engineers have been working to rebuild this bridge to last throughout earthquake. It's a single-tower, self anchored suspension bridge, meaning it anchors into the road deck, rather than anchor into the ground. This has never been done before and it is absolutely amazing. There are special "pins" in certain parts of, if I recall correctly, the horizontal road deck as well that allow it to sway up to three feet during an earthquake, to prevent the road from collapsing. This is an absolutely beautiful example of engineering that incorporates so many disciplines of the field. This aired on an episode of Build It Bigger on the Science Channel.

Things I've been loving lately.

Hello everyone! I hope everyone has stared off the week well. This post is pretty self-explanatory, it's just things I've been loving lately.
Chelsea Handler. Daniel recently bought me this Chelsea Handler book, because he knows I love her, and I've been watching her show lately...It just boils down to I love Chelsea Handler.

Strawberry cheesecake, the best example of perfection on Earth.
Rings!
Netflix has definitely saved me from boredom during the slow start of the semester.
Brita water bottles are my best friend. I got two of these for Christmas, and not only do I no longer need to buy bottled water, but I can get water from pretty much anywhere and it taste amazing. These bottles also keep their temperature pretty well, so my cold water stays cold! I love these things!

Monday Loves

Goodbye's Stink.

It's just that plain and simple. Daniel had to leave today to go to his medic schooling in Texas for the next four months or so, and although I am very excited and happy for him, I of course had eyes that resembled leaking sink faucets, (or Niagara Falls, it's all relative). Even though we'll be able to talk on the phone this time around, (and you guys have no idea how much this excites me!!), I'll still miss him.

We've had a lovely past couple days together. We spent New Year's Eve and day together, both which were wonderful, and I got to take him to the airport this morning. I'm taking his leaving much better this time than I did when he left for basic the first two times, probably because we'll have much better ways of communicating. Overall, I know we'll make it through this and I'll be okay.
